Israel Philharmonic Orchestra
The legendary orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s beloved “Pathétique” Symphony in the ensemble’s ninth UMS appearance since its 1972 debut.
In 1936, Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman persuaded first-chair musicians of Eastern European and German orchestras who had lost their jobs as a result of Nazism to immigrate to Palestine. In doing so, he created an “orchestra of soloists,” which continues to absorb new immigrants and to act as a global community for musicians from around the world. Its inaugural concert was conducted by Arturo Toscanini in solidarity with Huberman and the Jewish refugee musicians as a public rebuke of Adolf Hitler.
We regret to inform that Zubin Mehta has been forced to bow out of the Israel Philharmonic’s Feb 9 performance due to health reasons. We wish Maestro Mehta our very best, and thank Yoel Levi for graciously filling in to conduct the program.
